![]() ![]() Dick helped us with things we could not manage ourselves. Dick cared so much for his grandchildren and made them feel loved and valued. Diogenes died January 13th 2013 peacefully and well loved by all who knew him. His daughter and sons and wife were there by his side through and through. In 2013, Dick went to hospice care in Chandler Hall in Newton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Spiritual Theology was written to meet the need for a historical background for the revival interest in the field in the 1990's. Dick wrote a textbook (2nd edition with Eric Springsted) Philosophy for Understanding Theology that is widely used in seminaries. Some of his books are intended to answer the questions people in adult classes ask about the Christian faith and have been used for Christian education classes. Mary, George, John and Tim grew up in seminary housing on the campus and found it a great place to live and play.ĭick was also an author of 18 books on Theology. He was named the Stuart Professor in 1981 and retired from the seminary in 2002. In 1967, Dick was appointed at Princeton Theological Seminary and so got the opportunity to train pastors which was his ultimate goal. While he was teaching, his family was content and happy in Canada. Jane and Dick's daughter Mary was born in 1961 and sons George, John and Timothy in 1963, 1965, 1968.ĭick's first teaching experience was at York University Toronto, Canada where the head of department, John Yolton, provided inspiring leadership to Dick. Also, Dick felt a call to teach and returned to Yale where he earned a MA in 1962 and a PhD in 1965. He never gave up working as a pastor, he led retreats, taught adult education classes and preached and served as interim pastors for the rest of his life. Dick's family is still thinking about Windham Church and how it is still thriving. Dick and Jane kept in contact with the church in Windham especially at the time of the 50th anniversary of Dick's ordination. ![]() Windham was a small rural church where Dick and Jane enjoyed many friendships and learned a lot about the ministry. In 1959, he was ordained and installed as pastor in Windham Presbyterian Church in Windham, New Hampshire where he had been serving part time while he was at Yale. His next stop was Yale Divinity School where he earned a BD in 1959. ![]() He was there for two years and earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. With strong financial support from his home church, Diogenes was not only able to go to the conference but also spend time with missionaries in France, India, Thailand and Japan.Īfter graduation from Kentucky, Dick had the opportunity to go to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Still Dick was far short for what he needed for his trip. He already in savings had $375.00 for the next year of college and with summer work he doubled that amount. The Board of Christian Education at Dick's church, Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, gave him $1,000. to the World Student Federation General Meeting in Nasrapur, India and was accepted but finances was still a problem. After high school he attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in1954.ĭuring his junior year of college in 1952 he was only 19 years old when Dick applied to be a student representative of the Presbyterian Church U.S. He began to talk to the youth group leader and pastor who both spent time talking to him and praying with him, eventually the pastor recommended to presbytery that he come under care and so he was on track to become a Presbyterian minister. He learned everything to know about running a restaurant but had no interest in doing so.ĭuring high school, Dick began to attend Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church and its youth group and began so enthusiastic about Christianity that his friends said he should become a minister. Dick worked for him while he was in school. While he was growing up his father owned a restaurant. Diogenes had two siblings, one brother Emmanuel, one sister Parthena. His father and mother George and Vasiliki were Greek immigrants. Diogenes Allen was born on October 17th, 1932, in Lexington Kentucky in Good Samaritan Hospital. ![]()
